Artistic Statement
Photography is widely acknowledged as a documentary medium, and some even claim that its documentary aspect is the essence of its nature. For me, though, there is no question that the true magic of photography lays in its expressive potential.
Expressive photography is not about recording [events, truth, reality]. It is about exposing [feelings, beauty, surprises] and exploring [possibilities, complexities, subtleties]. That is the realm in which I find motivation and inspiration.
I have a strong tendency toward simplicity and minimalism, but I’m more interested in photographing feelings and moods than simple interesting objects. I strive for compositions that transcend the physical nature of the object before my lens and focus instead on the experience of encountering the subject from a particular perspective. I love shooting studio work with live models because of the incredible degree of control I have over lighting and compositional elements to express that experience.

Bio
I was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1965 and raised in rural Oklahoma. I have lived in Alaska since 1988. I’ve worn many hats during my journey, including (but not limited to) that of a soldier, a liqour salesman, an ice cream scooper, a school bus driver, a forester, a researcher, and a bureaucrat. I currently live on a small farm about 30 miles outside Fairbanks, Alaska with my wife, 8 dogs, 20 goats, countless fowl, a dozen bee hives (sadly empty at the moment), and a curious cow named Ruby.
